The Department of Medical Studies was first established at the Riyadh Military Hospital in the year 1977. The principal objectives were to facilitate higher professional training for Saudi Medical Staff at all levels of professional development. The responsibility included promotion of postgraduate medical training and continuing medical education under the auspices of the Ministry of Defence and Civil Aviation (MODA). Riyadh Military Hospital, ever since, has been at the forefront of higher professional training in all medical and surgical specialties. Medical Studies Department has established liaison with national and international centers of excellence in pursuit of its educational and training objectives. Postgraduate training under the Saudi/Arab Board was established in major medical and surgical specialties including Dentistry. 

Some of the training programs, not available in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, are linked with universities and training centers abroad. Riyadh Military Hospital is accredited for higher professional training in the following specialties:
